Small businesses are being strangled in Red Tape

Myth Busters

‘Small businesses are being strangled by over-zealous inspectors and red tape’

The truth is that on average small businesses are likely to receive a visit once in every 20 years. Even larger businesses only receive a visit every ten years or so. It is true that businesses involved in more hazardous operations are visited more frequently, but often visiting inspectors can help in terms of making things easier and more practical, so be honest and share some of your difficulties. If you can get the inspector on your side, your problems will be halved. A genuine willingness to comply will go a long way. Small businesses are also exempt from some regulations, for example it is not necessary to carry out a written risk assessment if you employ fewer than five employees.
