Bitten in the bunker.
For many years Cancun in Mexico has been a wonderful place to holiday. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor were among the first stars to holiday there. Cancun is now very popular with holidaymakers and particularly golfers from all around the world.
Every golfer knows that the golf course can be a dangerous place…wayward golf balls etc, but crocodiles are not a danger that springs to mind when discussing a round of golf!
The following was in the press last week and the term “Health and safety on the golf course” didn’t seem to at the forefront of this golf course owner’s minds. It seems unbelievable that even though the course owners were well aware of the presence of crocodiles in the many lakes on the course they did not considerate necessary to place warning signs anywhere! Golf health and safety in Kent is always rigidly adhered to so why not in Cancun?
With its well-manicured greens and fabulous beach side location, this particular 18-hole course at Cancun has a deserved reputation as a golfer’s paradise. But a 58-year-old British tourist is lucky to be alive after he was attacked by a 12ft crocodile at the Mexican golf resort.
He was only saved when his friends beat the animal with their clubs and drove a golf buggy over it repeatedly to get it to release its grip from his right thigh.
The golfer needed an emergency operation after the attack which happened as he played a bunker shot near a tropical swamp and is now recovering in hospital after having his leg put back together with 200 stitches.
He said: ‘My ball was in the bunker around ten to 15 feet from thick shrubbery. ‘I didn’t even know there was water behind the bushes. I took a shot and it landed on the green.
‘Then I heard this noise behind me and this huge crocodile snapped me by the thigh. I couldn’t feel pain. I was in total shock. It was like a big toy, big black eyes looking at me. Hitting it was like hitting a brick wall.’
One of his two friends had to drive his golf buggy over the crocodile while the other hit it with their clubs.
The animal attacked the golf cart before slinking back into the swamp from where it had first appeared. Even after it happened, other people were still playing golf, that’s determination for you !
